Abu Dhabi Terminals Launches Diving Campaign to Clean Capital Ports

29/04/2012
Initiative aims to raise awareness of protecting Emirate’s marine environment

As part of its commitment to protecting the marine environment and raising awareness of the importance of preserving Abu Dhabi’s natural assets, Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT) has completed a two-day diving campaign to clean the seabed of a number of the Emirate’s ports and marinas: Mina Zayed, the Free Port, New Free Port, Musaffah Port

The “Dive together to clean our Capital Ports” campaign has seen more than 150 divers and volunteers from both the government and private sector take part. This was a challenging process which required careful planning to ensure the safety and security of all participants. The divers in all five ports were given a thorough safety and security induction and instructions by professionals before taking part, and all the waste they collected was disposed of responsibly by Abu Dhabi Centre for Waste Collection.

Abdullah Al Muharrami, Deputy CEO, Abu Dhabi terminals said, “The marine environment is one of Abu Dhabi’s key assets and we encourage companies and individuals alike to work together to protect them. This campaign is part of Abu Dhabi Terminals’ commitment to responsibility role towards the marine environment, which is facing unprecedented levels of threats and challenges from pollution, waste, and urban developments.

“The campaign has received great support from both the public and private sectors, as well as the community, who are keen to take an active role in protecting the marine environment and raising awareness of how clean and healthy waters will have an important role in protecting our future”, she added.

Supporters and participants in the campaign included: Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, UAE Armed Forces, Critical National Infrastructure Authority, Environment Agency- Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Port Company, Department of Economic Development, Takatof, ADMA, ADGAS, the Centre of Waste Management Centre, in addition to Emirates Diving Association, Emirates Volunteers Association, GASCO Diving Club, Al Mahara Diving Center, and Al Dhafra Tourist Village.
